Young UAE schoolers enjoyed a fun, musical start to their week at the ongoing Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival (SCRF 2023), at a harmonica workshop, which taught more than 30 young pupils the basics of using the free wind instrument, which has shaped the popular musical genres of blues, jazz, country and rock. 

Led by expert Italian harmonica player, Mark, known for his mastery over the instrument, the session began with him playing some soothing tunes before he gave the children an overview of the instrument, its parts and how it is played. 

“Simply, the harmonica is composed of holes that direct air from one’s mouth to produce notes. It produces sounds when a person inhales or exhales”, explained Mark. As the session progressed, he patiently guided children through a range of playing techniques, from simple melodies and chords to bends and overblows.
Every child received individual attention and guidance, allowing them to progress at their own pace, while encouraging them to experiment and improvise, to blow out air of creativity to make their own unique sound and style.

As the workshop drew to a close, the instructor provided plenty of opportunities for participants to put their skills into practice, leading group exercises and encouraging them to collaborate and jam with each other.

The ‘Special Harmonica’ workshop for children was a resounding success, providing a unique and engaging opportunity for young musicians to explore the wonderful world of the harmonica.

This workshop serves as a testament to the power of music to bring people together, inspire creativity, and cultivate a lifelong love of learning which SCRF endeavours to accomplish.
