Dubai's First Accredited Centre of Excellence in Endometriosis, Emerges at Medcare Women & Children Hospital

Medcare Women & Children Hospital has become the first hospital in Dubai to receive the Gold Seal Accreditation as Centre of Excellence for Endometriosis Multidisciplinary Care (COEMEC) by the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC), USA. This accreditation is awarded for meeting the highest global standards of medical care for endometriosis, a chronic inflammatory disease affecting roughly 10% (per cent) of women and girls who are of reproductive age worldwide. Endometriosis is a disease where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus, causing severe pain, infertility and other complications. The Centre of Excellence for Endometriosis Care at Medcare Women & Children Hospital was created to standardise the management and follow-up of patients, providing renewed hope for recovery and an elevated quality of life.

The accreditation was awarded to Medcare Women & Children Hospital following a rigorous evaluation process by the SRC, which entailed a thorough inspection of the facility to ensure an institutional commitment to excellence in endometriosis care. During the process, the Endometriosis Centre demonstrated extensive experience in endometriosis surgeries, transparent consultation services, before, during and after the qualifying process with a comprehensive patient education program, and high board certification for medical professionals. The multidisciplinary team, consisting of Master Surgeons in Obstetrics & Gynaecologists, Colorectal Surgeons, Urology Experts, Pain Management Specialists, Specialised Radiology Professionals work round-the-clock to provide comprehensive care to patients with debilitating endometriosis, aiming to diagnose complex cases with the use of non-invasive radiological imaging, and perform fertility-enhancing surgeries.

Dr. Ahmad Abdelhameed, Medical Director at Medcare Women & Children Hospital, said, “We are proud to be honoured with the Gold Seal of Excellence in Multidisciplinary Endometriosis Care as it has enabled the hospital to set the standard for endometriosis care in the UAE & the region. This award also highlights our incredible doctors and surgeons who are at the forefront of innovation in the field of endometriosis care.”

“Despite presenting with severe symptoms, the entire spectrum of involvement of endometriosis is unknown. Patient management is highly variable in both treatment methods and outcomes due to the different presentations of the disease. Thus, we want to bridge the gap between existing services and deliver the best possible care to our patients,” he added.

One of the major reasons the true number of women suffering from endometriosis is higher than the world wide reported rate of only 1.5 per cent, is that many women are forced to face the disease without getting a proper diagnosis.

The hospital sees over 500 cases of complex endometriosis every year. Its success rate for pregnancy after surgical intervention, for patients with Deep Infiltrating Endometriosis, the most severe kind,  is roughly 65 % aligning with global standards. Furthermore, surgical interventions have demonstrated an improved quality of life for 80 to 100 per cent of patients. The services offered at the centre include accurate diagnosis, pain management, expert surgical excision, fertility treatment, medical management, and long-term follow-up.

Commenting on how the hospital will maintain and improve its standards and quality that have earned it the COEMEC, Dr. Shanila Laiju, Medcare CEO said, “It is important to us that we maintain the quality of endometriosis care we provide while participating in deep research into the topic to further our knowledge of the disease. Our excellent surgeons are a significant part of our scientific committee and are proactive in the field of research and evidence-based medicine.”

“Moreover, we are continuously investing in the latest state of the art equipment and technology to be able to tackle even most complex cases of deep infiltrating endometriosis providing utmost safety to our patients. We aim to implement the changes in treatment plans based on our research and make them the new standard of endometriosis care,” she added.

Medcare Women & Children Hospital has demonstrated successful implementation of clinical pathways and standardized operating procedures in their treatment plan for endometriosis. It has enabled the hospital to centralize patient care for different types and presentations of endometriosis, which has increased their rate of success and accurate diagnosis of the disease.
