EHS provided medical 3D printing technology restores full function to accident patient.
A medical team consisting of maxillofacial surgeons from Umm Al Quwain Specialized Dental Centre, part of Emirates Health Services (EHS), succeeded in performing a delicate surgery at Umm Al Quwain Hospital to reconstruct a bony fracture on the bottom of the left eye socket of a 35-year-old patient using medical 3D printing technology.
Director of Umm Al Quwain Specialized Dental Centre, Dr Fatema Naser Muraddad, said that the successful facial reconstruction, was a new addition to the EHS successes in this type of surgery, which contributes to enhancing the community’s confidence in its medical staff, raising the level of medical and treatment services, as well as strengthening the institution's position as a leading authority in the healthcare sector in the UAE.
The surgery, carried out in March, was performed and supervised by Dr Mohamed Farid Abdelwahed, a maxillofacial surgeon.
The patient suffered a serious injury resulting in double vision and restricted left eye movement when looking up. After subjecting him to a CT scan, it was found that more than 50 percent of the bones under the left eye socket were fractured, in addition to the prolapse of fatty tissue surrounding the eye within the left maxillary sinus.
Dr Mohamed Farid Abdelwahed performed the surgery after designing and 3D printing a model of the patient's left eye socket by reconstructing a metal mesh. The patient's condition was followed up for 6 months, and scans proved the success of the restoration and treatment.
3D printing is one of the innovative services provided by the Umm Al Quwain Specialized Dental Centre of EHS, supporting the maxillofacial surgery speciality. The new technology simulates any stereoscopic or three-dimensional model, to create an exact image of it.
The service has been available since 2021 and is used to treat a variety of surgical cases, including dental implants, jaw fracture surgery, and eye socket fractures.
